How Remote Gaze looks, feels and stays private, in plain terms.

Picture and speed

Is Remote Gaze another VNC app?

No. It was built only for Apple devices. Your Mac sends video, the way a video call does, and your touches and keys go back as the Mac’s own input. It isn’t guessing at pixels.

How sharp is the picture?

It’s drawn at your screen’s own pixel count. In App mode on a 13-inch iPad Pro, that’s 2752 × 2064, pixel for pixel. Choose Sharpest for the most detail, Smoothest for the most motion, or let Automatic decide.

What about color and text?

When your Mac and your device both support it, Remote Gaze keeps color at full resolution, so colored text and fine lines stay crisp instead of fringing. If either one can’t, it quietly uses the next best thing.

How smooth is it?

Up to 120 frames per second on a 120 Hz iPad or iPhone. Other screens get 60. In testing, a Mac mini streaming to a 13-inch iPad Pro at home held about 110.

How quickly does it respond?

On a home network, within a few dozen milliseconds, which feels immediate for typing, scrolling and dragging. Away from home it depends on both networks.

Does the video compress?

Yes. The Mac compresses every frame in hardware and your device decodes it in hardware, which keeps both cool and quick. Remote Gaze adjusts to your connection, so a busy network softens the picture a little instead of stalling it.

Connecting

Do I need an account or a server?

No. There’s nothing to sign up for, and nothing passes through anyone else’s server. Your devices talk directly to each other.

How does it find my Mac at home?

It simply appears. After you pair once, your Mac shows up in the app whenever you’re on the same network.

And away from home?

Gaze Host can ask your router for a way in that changes regularly and answers only your paired devices. If your router can’t do that, a VPN such as Tailscale or WireGuard works too, and you can connect to your Mac by its address.

Does it work over cellular?

Yes. On an iPhone, it connected to a Mac at home in under a second, at up to about 12 Mbps. Your results depend on both networks.

What if my network changes mid-session?

Remote Gaze notices and reconnects on its own. Stepping away and coming back is fine too: your device waits patiently for your Mac, even through a restart.

Privacy and security

How is my connection protected?

You pair once with a six-digit code. Each device then gets a random 256-bit key of its own, and everything it sends or receives is encrypted with it.

Is everything encrypted?

Yes. Your Mac and your device talk directly, and everything they exchange, the picture, your touches and your files, is encrypted end to end. There’s no server in between that could read it.

What does the Secure Enclave do?

Away from home, your device signs in with a key made inside its Secure Enclave. The key never leaves the chip, so it can’t be copied to another device. It’s created the first time you connect at home.

What if someone picks up my unlocked iPad?

Away from home, Remote Gaze asks for Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode first. Your Mac also keeps a list of every visit from away, so you can disconnect or remove a device in a click.

What if I lose a device?

Remove it in Gaze Host. Its key stops working, and every other device carries on as before.

What does the Mac have to allow?

Three things, which Gaze Host walks you through: Local Network, so your devices can find it, Screen Recording, to show your display, and Accessibility, so touch and typing can reach your apps.

Do you publish how it works?

Not during the beta. Its security rests on keys that belong only to your devices, not on keeping details secret. We’d rather finish it properly before opening it up.

Using it

How do touch and the keyboard work?

With Direct Touch, you tap what’s under your finger, swipe to scroll, and hold to drag. You can switch to a trackpad whenever you like. On iPhone, the app brings its own keyboard.

What is App mode?

One Mac app, reshaped to fill your iPad or iPhone at its own Retina resolution, instead of your whole desktop shrunk down.

Can I move files and copy between them?

Yes. Copy and paste works both ways, and you can drag files from your iPad onto the Mac’s picture.

Does dictation work?

Yes. Dictate into the app’s keyboards, and the words land on your Mac.

Compatibility

Which devices does it run on?

Gaze Host needs macOS 26 or later. The app runs on iPad and iPhone with iPadOS or iOS 26 or later, including an unfolded iPhone Duo.

How do I get it?

Both Gaze Host and the iPad and iPhone app are in beta. Join the beta list and we’ll be in touch as soon as there’s room for you.
